Luxfer helping Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service keep young drivers safe

NOTTINGHAM, England (Jan. 25, 2008) — Young drivers and students in the East Midlands recently received firsthand advice about using the roads safely in a series of Road Safety Days organised and hosted by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Events sponsored by Luxfer Gas Cylinders were aimed at young drivers aged between 17 and 24 and featured safety-related workshops, including ‘Buying Your First Car,’ presented by Trading Standards, together with advice on road safety and accident prevention from the County Road Safety Team, St John Ambulance and other regional organisations.

Statistics show that drivers aged between 17 and 24 are much more likely to be involved in a road traffic collision than any other age group, and in Nottinghamshire 18-year-old drivers are particularly at risk.

Each event was brought to a dramatic close with an extrication demonstration by firefighters and rescue experts, who showed how they use medical skills and special equipment to cut casualties free from wrecked cars.

Vicky Butler, Luxfer’s European marketing manager, commented: “As a local manufacturer, we at Luxfer have developed a much-valued relationship with Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, and we welcome the opportunity to become more closely involved with their valuable work within the community.

Luxfer Gas Cylinders to restructure manufacturing operations in US and England

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Jan. 8, 2008)—Luxfer Gas Cylinders announced today that it will restructure its cylinder manufacturing operations in the U.S. and England in 2008. Facilities in Riverside, Calif.; Huntington Beach, Calif.; Graham, N.C.; and Nottingham, England, will be involved.

In Riverside, Luxfer currently operates an aluminum cylinder plant and service center in the same large factory, as well as two composite cylinder operations in separate facilities. The company also manufactures aluminum liners for composite cylinders in Huntington Beach at its Hydrospin unit.

As part of the phased restructuring, Luxfer will move all aluminum cylinder manufacturing from Riverside to its plants in North Carolina and England and then consolidate its two U.S. composite cylinder plants into the same large factory in Riverside that had previously made aluminum cylinders. Large-diameter composite liner manufacturing operations will also be moved from Huntington Beach into the single Riverside facility; small-diameter aluminum liner operations will remain in Huntington Beach. Service center operations will cease.

As operations are consolidated, some 140 jobs will be eliminated, primarily in Riverside. Luxfer expects to complete phased restructuring activities by September 2008.

“This comprehensive restructuring is the result of a detailed analysis of ways to improve our manufacturing practices and to make best use of our global facilities,” said John Rhodes, President of Luxfer Gas Cylinders. “These actions will not only make our aluminum cylinder manufacturing operations around the world more effective, they will increase the efficiency of our composite cylinder operations in the United States.” Rhodes said that a detailed plan is in place to facilitate a smooth transition and prevent disruption of service to customers around the world.

In addition to its plants in California, North Carolina and England, Luxfer operates aluminum and composite cylinder facilities in Gerzat, France, and a composite cylinder factory in Shanghai, China. The world’s largest manufacturer of high-pressure aluminum and composite cylinders, Luxfer Gas Cylinders is part of the worldwide Luxfer Group of companies.

Luxfer supports World COPD Day to help identify Nottingham’s undiagnosed patients

NOTTINGHAM, England (Dec. 14, 2007)—Members and supporters of British Lung Foundation (BLF) Breathe Easy groups recently held a fundraising event in Nottingham’s Broadmarsh Centre in support of the 6th annual World COPD Day.

Luxfer Gas Cylinders, a long-time BLF supporter, assisted with the highly successful event. which was also supported by specialist respiratory nurses who carried out spirometry lung function testing on Nottingham residents to help identify people who may already have COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) but not realise it.

“COPD is the UK’s fifth biggest killer, claiming around 30,000 lives a year, yet nine out of ten people in the UK have never heard of it,” said Vicky Butler, Luxfer’s medical marketing manager. “World COPD Day is the ideal opportunity for Luxfer to help the British Lung Foundation find the ‘missing millions’ affected by the disease, especially since Nottingham has been identified as one the country’s hotspots for people most at risk of being hospitalised with COPD.”

More than three million people in the UK are thought to have COPD, yet more than two thirds are undiagnosed. The British Lung Foundation is calling for the introduction of routine lung function tests every three years in primary care for those people most at risk, including adults over 35 with a smoking history, people who feel breathless and people who have suffered from recurrent chest infections. If diagnosed early, COPD patients can be managed more successfully and the progression of the disease can be slowed.

The British Lung Foundation is the only UK charity working for everyone affected by lung disease, providing support for affected people today and working in a variety of ways, including funding world-class research, to bring about improved treatment, care and support for the future. BLF provides information via its website, www.lunguk.org and telephone helpline: 08458 50 50 20.

Luxfer to exhibit Luxfer Medical lightweight oxygen cylinder range at Arab Health 2008 exhibition in Dubai

NOTTINGHAM, England (Dec. 9, 2007)—Luxfer Gas Cylinders will exhibit its state-of-the-art, lightweight Luxfer Medical gas cylinder range at Arab Health 2008, a major international hospital, medical equipment and services exhibition to be held Jan. 28-31 in Dubai, UAE, at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

The largest healthcare event in the Middle East, in 2007 the Arab Health exhibition attracted 2,189 companies from 67 countries and nearly 38,000 visitors.

Aluminium and composite Luxfer Medical oxygen cylinders, lightweight alternatives to conventional steel cylinders, allow oxygen patients to remain active longer—and medical staff can transport these cylinders much more easily with reduced risk of injury. Strong, durable Luxfer Medical cylinders not only provide as much or more gas capacity as conventional cylinders, they are also a cost-effective alternative to liquid oxygen systems.

Used in home oxygen therapy, emergency medical services (EMS), pre-hospital care, and in hospitals, nursing homes and other medical institutions, Luxfer Medical cylinders are also non-magnetic and safe for use around MRI equipment.

Vicky Butler of Luxfer Gas Cylinders said: “We’re delighted to be exhibiting at Arab Health 2008, where we not only plan to enhance our presence in the Middle East, but also to advance Luxfer’s long-term commitment to working with global health organisations, physician and therapist organisations and patient groups to improve treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and other respiratory disorders.”

Luxfer introduces Supernatural scuba tank at DEMA show

ORLANDO, Florida (Oct. 31-Nov. 2, 2007)—Luxfer Gas Cylinders introduced its new Supernatural™ line of aluminum scuba tanks at the annual Dive Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (DEMA) exhibition and tradeshow.

Described by Luxfer as “the most beautiful ugly tank we’ve ever made,” the Supernatural features Luxfer’s proprietary, crack-resistant L6X® aluminum alloy, as well as a special heat-treatment process that gives the tank’s external surface a super corrosion-resistant oxide barrier. “Luxfer’s L6X alloy is already corrosion-resistant, and our heat treatment makes it even more so,” said Kathryn Gamboa, Luxfer’s scuba sales manager.

The external oxide-barrier on the Supernatural is left intact—no blasting, brushing or painting. “That means the gray external surface of the tank isn’t very pretty,” Ms. Gamboa said. “But the Supernatural is not only the most corrosion-resistant tank you can buy, it’s also the easiest to maintain—and dive professionals tell us they care more about those benefits than initial appearance, especially since unpainted or stripped aluminum tanks eventually turn gray, anyway, when exposed to water.”

Owners of large tank fleets will especially benefit from the ease of maintenance offered by the Supernatural. “We think they’ll find that our ‘ugly’ tank is actually beautiful,” Ms. Gamboa said.

Luxfer paintball team re-matched with London Tigers in second annual Mayhem Day

NOTTINGHAM, England (Oct. 15, 2007)--Grudge-match day finally arrived for Luxfer Nottingham's 14-strong team of fearless paintball warriors as they travelled to deepest Basildon to face the London Tigers in the second annual ‘Mayhem Day’ shoot-out in the summer of 2007.

Luxfer Gas Cylinders sponsors the Kent-based Tigers, the third-ranked professional paintball team in Europe. The Tigers use Luxfer lightweight carbon composite cylinders as part of their standard equipment.

With the memory of last-year’s heavy defeat still fresh in their minds, the Luxfer team arrived in Essex heavily armed with an arsenal of Tiger-taming tactics, including one fail-proof strategy to “shoot them where it hurts.”

Although slightly disorientated with this year’s change in battle scenarios, the Luxfer players prepared for combat with the Tigers by organising themselves into two teams armed with unlimited ammunition, lighter guns and the promise of beer and a barbeque if they managed to get through the day.

The first scenario was played in Bottom Wood, where things quickly went from bad to worse for the Luxfer contingent when, despite a thorough briefing on game rules, one member of Luxfer’s “green” team confused his own ally with the enemy and shot him, leaving the blue team with a clear advantage.

After battling it out across gruelling scenarios—including a tank convoy, urban landscape and an aeroplane field—the Luxfer players finally faced a showdown in which they were thoroughly trounced by the Tigers, who had by then lent them their guns and weapons ostensibly out of good sportsmanship—but most probably out of pity, judging by the away team’s bruises and paint splats!

The London Tigers yet again not only proved themselves formidable opponents, but also fantastic hosts on another memorable mayhem day.

Any volunteers for the next re-match?
