The UK’s first hydrogen train is unveiled

NOTTINGHAM, England, UK – 20 June 2019 (BUSINESS WIRE) – Luxfer Gas Cylinders, a business unit of Luxfer Holdings PLC (NYSE:LXFR) and the world’s largest manufacturer of high-pressure composite and aluminum cylinders, today announced that its G-Stor® H2 hydrogen cylinders have been used to help fuel the UK’s first full-sized hydrogen powered demonstrator train. Unveiled at the RailLive 2019 show, the HyrdroFLEX project consists of a former Thameslink electric train retrofitted to run using a hydrogen fuel system.

“We’re proud to have worked on this innovative project which marks a significant step towards realising the UK’s ambitions to have a more efficient, greener transport network,” said Lewis Anderson, Alternative Fuel Manager at Luxfer Gas Cylinders. “This is just the start. Now that the concept is proven, the next phase is to put a hydrogen fuel system into a mainline passenger service offering a range of around 600 miles and requiring re-fuelling once a day.”

Luxfer’s alternative fuel experts worked in close collaboration with Porterbrook and the University of Birmingham’s Centre for Railway Research, which won the Department for Transport funding to support the concept. The four-cylinder hydrogen solution was developed and assembled in Luxfer’s Nottingham, UK alternative fuel facility, which also supplies bespoke hydrogen solutions for a number of European buses including London double decker buses.

“With the government’s recent commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2050, hydrogen provides a real alternative to diesel transport and electricity,” commented Dr. Mark Lawday, Luxfer’s head of European sales. “This project is an excellent example of Luxfer’s commitment to a clean, green economy across the globe.”

successful testing milestone of 30 year SCBA

Riverside, California USA – May 24, 2019 Luxfer Gas Cylinders, a business unit of Luxfer Holdings PLC (NYSE: LXFR) and the world’s largest manufacturer of high-pressure composite and aluminium cylinders, announces the successful completion of the first testing milestone for LCX-EL® SCBA cylinders with 30 year life under DOT Special Permit 14232.

In 2008 Luxfer Gas Cylinders designed and manufactured the first cylinders under the brand LCX-EL® with an increase in service life from fifteen years to thirty years. The qualification program mandated by the US DOT under Special Permit 14232 requires that a sample of 30 cylinders from the first year of manufacture of each cylinder size be collected from the field and tested at 10 years of service. Then a second sample of 30 cylinders from the first year of manufacture is also collected and tested at 15 years of service. Upon successful completion of the mandated tests at both ten and fifteen years of service, all cylinders of that design can continue as normal in the field beyond the standard life of 15 years to a maximum of 30 years.

Luxfer has completed the first milestone in this process and passed all the inspections and tests required by the US DOT under Special Permit 14232 at ten years of service life for the first manufactured batch of 9 liter LCX-EL® SCBA cylinders sold in 2008. Luxfer has informed the US DOT of the successful results of the testing, and all the 9 liter LCX-EL® cylinders in service can continue as normal.

In a further five years, at fifteen years of service, another group of 9 liter LCX-EL® cylinders from the first year of manufacture will be tested. If the tests mandated by the US DOT are passed at fifteen years, then all 9 liter LCX-EL® cylinders can continue in service for a further fifteen years – giving a total life of 30 years as designed.

Luxfer is pleased to announce that the 9 liter LCX-EL® cylinders are performing as designed, and will soon begin testing under Special Permit 14232 on the remaining sizes in the LCX-EL® range.

Luxfer to Showcase Lightweight L7X® Medical Cylin

Luxfer cylinders designed to deliver outstanding clinical performance and cost savings to healthcare industry

Sao Paolo, BRAZIL – May 21, 2019 Luxfer Gas Cylinders, a business unit of Luxfer Holdings PLC (NYSE: LXFR) and the world’s largest manufacturer of high-pressure composite and aluminium cylinders, will showcase its lightweight L7X® medical cylinders at Hospitalar 2019 in Gaswide’s booth #170, Expo Center Norte, Sao Paolo. Gaswide is a Brazil distributor for Luxfer medical cylinders.

Luxfer’s patented higher-strength L7X alloy medical cylinders offer significant cost savings and productivity improvements to the healthcare industry by providing:

  • 50 percent more oxygen capacity
  • 40 percent lighter weight than steel cylinders
  • Higher-pressure filling (up to 3,000 psi or 207 bar)
  • Industry-best 15-year warranty
  • Exceptional durability and corrosion resistance

“Hospitals are continually looking for solutions that help deliver optimum patient care, while at the same time, reducing costs, improving productivity and streamlining operations,” said Rob DuPuis, Vice President of Sales, Luxfer Gas Cylinders. “By significantly increasing a cylinder’s gas capacity while maintaining its size and weight, the per patient delivery costs – fuel, vehicle maintenance and labor – of L7X medical cylinders are greatly reduced.”

Holding up to 50 percent more oxygen than conventional medical cylinders, Luxfer estimates that its L7X medical cylinders can provide delivery cost savings alone of up to $500 per year, per patient. Since the number of cylinders required to deliver the same oxygen volume can be reduced by up to one-third, further cost savings can be realized through reductions in delivery truck and warehouse space, lessened equipment handling times and lower cylinder requalification fees.

“We are excited to work with a global leader and technology pioneer such as Luxfer to demonstrate the capabilities of L7X medical cylinders at the Hospitalar show,” said Luciano Bonelli, Gaswide, a Luxfer distribution partner based in Brazil. “L7X medical cylinders are already proven in other parts of the world and we are confident that this innovative product will make a similar impact here in Latin America.”

To see Luxfer L7X medical cylinders, visit Gaswide’s booth #170 at Hospitalar.

European launch of Luxfer ECLIPSE

Renowned for being at the forefront of technology, Luxfer have pioneered the first significant SCBA (Self-contained Breathing Apparatus) cylinder design change in over twenty years; introducing the ECLIPSE.

This latest weight-saving design enhances performance and minimises weight-related health risks for firefighters, emergency personnel and SCBA industry professionals.

The ECLIPSE is up to 20 percent lighter than comparable aluminium-lined (Type 3) composite cylinders and up to 3 percent lighter than plastic-lined (Type 4) cylinders used primarily in Europe.

Professor Denise Smith, Director of the Skidmore College (U.S.) First Responder Health and Safety Laboratory and a global expert on firefighter health, commented: “With cardiac events currently the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths, firefighters and SCBA manufacturers should embrace opportunities to decrease the cardiovascular strain associated with firefighting. Significantly decreasing the weight of the SCBA cylinder while retaining the same level of respiratory protection suggests that Luxfer ECLIPSE will become the new de facto standard in the SCBA industry.”

To see the Luxfer ECLIPSE cylinders and for your chance to win an apple watch, please visit Stand M19, Hall Bugey, 41 Rue de Lagnieu at the Congres NATIONAL DES SAPEURS-POMPIERS 2018.

Luxfer Gas Cylinders position concerning life extension program

On April 21, 2017, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) announced that it had “issued a special permit to authorize the extension of the 15-year service of certain carbon fiber reinforced aluminum-lined cylinders (DOT-CFFC) that are used in self-contained breathing apparatuses by firefighters and first responders.” The PHMSA website states that under this new Special Permit 16320, issued to Digital Wave Corporation, “cylinder life can be extended an additional 15 years through the use of Modal Acoustic Emissions (MAE) testing . . . in five-year increments. . . .”

Luxfer Gas Cylinders, the world’s largest manufacturer of carbon composite cylinders used in self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA), has not been involved with this new life-extension program. Luxfer 15-year SCBA cylinders are designed and approved in the U.S. (Special Permit 10915) and Canada for a 15-year service life, and Luxfer accordingly issues a 15-year warranty for the full service life of each cylinder it manufactures. Since 1995, Luxfer has made more than 10 million carbon composite SCBA cylinders, which have an exceptional safety record. Over the years, Luxfer has conducted a significant amount of testing over and above standard requirements to ensure that Luxfer cylinders can stand up to demanding firefighting environments for a 15-year period.

The special permit issued to Digital Wave initially required that the original special permit marking of each cylinder requalified by means of MAE testing be covered and replaced with “DOT-SP-16320.” However, on October 5, 2017 the Special Permit was reissued with the requirements modified so that cylinders that have been requalified by MAE “must be marked “DOT-SP 16320”in addition to the original cylinder special permit number. This change was enacted to overcome the fact that no SCBA manufacturer has approved Digital Wave life extended cylinders. Leaving Luxfer’s Special Permit number on a cylinder that is used in service beyond 15 years violates that terms of the permit, but we have no way to compel Digital Wave to remove our permit number. Luxfer cannot accept responsibility or liability for use of Luxfer-manufactured cylinders beyond the 15-year service life for which they were designed, nor does the Luxfer cylinder warranty extend beyond 15 years.

30-year Luxfer SCBA cylinders already available

Since 2008, Luxfer has manufactured and sold carbon composite SCBA cylinders with a 30-year design life under its LCX®-EL (Extra Life) brand. These cylinders are heavier and have thicker liners and more composite reinforcement than Luxfer 15-year designs as this is needed to meet performance requirements of the 30-year DOT special permit, as well as international standards for cylinders with a 30-year life.

Luxfer offers a wide range of SCBA cylinders

As part of a comprehensive range of SCBA cylinders, Luxfer also offers specially engineered higher-pressure (5,500-psi) cylinders, as well as super-lightweight models (LCX®-SL range) and extreme-duty models (LCX®-XL range).

Luxfer position on direct selling of SCBA cylinders to end-users in North America

Luxfer Gas Cylinders occasionally receives inquiries from fire departments and first-responders about the possibility of purchasing cylinders directly from Luxfer for use in self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and life-support equipment. On these occasions, we explain that Luxfer has always maintained a policy of selling Luxfer life-support cylinders only through original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of SCBA and related life-support products. The main reason for this policy is to ensure that our products are used in full compliance with all governing standards and regulations, including those related to end-user safety.Regulatory complianceSCBA OEMs conduct extensive research and product-development work to ensure not only that their products are safe, effective and designed to meet end-user demands, but also designed and manufactured to meet or exceed all requirements specified by applicable design and performance standards. In North America, these standards are dictated by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Title 42 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), part 84 [Approval of respiratory protection devices], details requirements for equipment construction and components, performance testing and quality-control plans. Cylinders, identified as "respirable breathing gas container[s]" within the standard, are included in the list of required components for SCBA and, consequently, all applicable cylinder designs must undergo required tests as part of a complete assembly to be considered compliant under the approval. Moreover, NIOSH approval is a prerequisite for all SCBA to be certified as compliant with NFPA 1981 [Standard on Open-Circuit Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for Emergency Services].These regulatory controls and requirements are in place to ensure that SCBA OEMs maintain overall control and total-life responsibility for the integrity and safety of all approved SCBAs, including cylinders and all other required components. While all Luxfer cylinders comply with applicable standards and regulations specific to cylinders-e.g., those issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Transport Canada (TC)-these approvals are distinctly separate from NIOSH and NFPA requirements described above. That is why Luxfer Gas Cylinders supplies its SCBA cylinders solely to and through SCBA original equipment manufacturers and does not sell directly to end-users.Please note that NIOSH advises that "replacing NIOSH-approved respirator parts, components, and accessories with non-NIOSH-approved parts manufactured by another company voids the NIOSH approval" (see http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/npptl/usernotices/notice02272014.html).In addition, the unauthorized sale of any Luxfer SCBA cylinder through a channel other than an authorized OEM will void the Luxfer warranty. Luxfer is neither responsible nor liable for unauthorized use of any Luxfer cylinder supplied by a source other than an authorized OEM.Cylinders sold in North America outside of OEM sales channels by third parties and by cylinder manufacturers for use with NIOSH/NFPA-certified SCBAs are not in compliance with governing standards and requirements and should not be put into service. For more information, please contact Luxfer Gas Cylinders.CONTACT: Scott Anderson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing - 336 306 8124 - scott.anderson@luxfer.com
